Louisville Habitat Celebrates Completion of Sheppard Square

Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville recently celebrated the completion of its 16-home commitment at Sheppard Square, marking a major milestone in the redevelopment of the former public housing complex and a years-long partnership with the Louisville Metro Housing Authority.

Since Louisville Habitat completed its first Sheppard Square home in 2020, 16 families have gained access to affordable homeownership in the Smoketown neighborhood, creating opportunities for greater financial stability, generational wealth, and long-term roots in the community.

The celebration brought together homeowners, project partners, sponsors, community members, and local leaders, including Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and Councilman Ken Herndon, who represents the district. Both joined the event to recognize the impact of the Sheppard Square redevelopment and the role affordable homeownership plays in strengthening Louisville neighborhoods.

The event concluded with the dedication of Louisville Habitat’s 16th and final home at Sheppard Square.

That home belongs to Kaylah, a single mother to a two-year-old daughter who works as a Center Support Specialist at KORT Physical Therapy. As the first person in her family to purchase a home, Kaylah shared that homeownership represents the opportunity to provide her daughter with a forever home while creating a different path for the next generation.

Kaylah’s home was sponsored by the Holy High 5: St. James Catholic Church, St. Raphael the Archangel, St. Brigid Catholic Church, St. Agnes Catholic Church, and Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Local media joined us to share this milestone and highlight the impact affordable homeownership can have on families and neighborhoods throughout Louisville.
