Homebuyer Advocate

There is a lot to learn as a first-time homebuyer, and Habitat needs volunteers to help support the path to homeownership. Volunteers on the Homebuyer Advocate Committee work directly with approved homebuyers to guide them through the process. They provide one-on-one support to each homebuyer and appropriately help address needs before, during, and after construction of homes. 

Tasks Include:

  • Attending orientation, monthly workshops, and other events as possible.
  • Assisting homebuyers with finding homeowner’s insurance and utility setup
  • Assisting homebuyers with sweat equity hours.
  • Attending purchase agreement signing, design conference, Raise the Roof, Ground Blessing, Dedication, final walk-through and closing.
  • Attending monthly Advocate Committee Meeting.

Homebuyer Selection

Habitat receives many applications to the homebuyer program, and these volunteers are critical to reviewing the information and recommending qualified applicants to the board for approval. This committee establishes criteria, screens questionnaires, processes applications, and makes home visits to each prospective homebuyer. Knowledge or experience with the mortgage lending process or real estate is helpful, but not required.

Tasks Include:

    • Collecting, reviewing, verifying and qualifying applications for homeownership.
    • Conducting home visits.
    • Attending pertinent orientation and training.
    • Serving for minimum of one year.
    • Attending bi-monthly Homebuyer Selection Committee Meetings.

Site Selection

Habitat needs volunteers, partner families, and land to keep working towards its mission. Site Selection is responsible for the acquisition and management of land resources. Habitat maintains a portfolio of real estate assets in order to provide quality sites on which our homebuyers can build. This volunteer position is vital to the success of Habitat’s mission. Real Estate experience is preferred.

Tasks Include:

    • Researching PVA and LOJIC for relevant site information regarding land/house donations and sales.
    • Ordering appraisals, surveys, and flood certifications.
    • Completing environmental reviews for appropriate sites.
    • Ensuring compliance with state and local ordinances for tax exemption and site acquisition.
    • Attending monthly Site Selection Committee Meeting.
