Since 1985, Habitat Louisville has been bringing our community together to build stable homes, strong relationships and healthy neighborhoods. Our homeownership program empowers low-income families to invest in themselves and invest in their communities. By providing a hand up, not a hand out, our homebuyers can build a path towards financial stability and a brighter future.
In addition to our homeownership program, we believe in revitalizing and investing in our city’s most underserved neighborhoods. We work hand-in-hand with area residents to increase pride in their neighborhood and improve their quality of life. Through home repairs and beautification projects, our city’s most challenged communities are becoming healthier, safer and more sustainable.

Myths & Facts
Fact: Habitat offers a hand up, not a hand out to families and individuals in need of decent, affordable shelter. We partner with homebuyers who are unable to obtain conventional house financing — generally, those whose income is between 30 – 80% of the area’s median income. Homebuyers contribute 400 hours of sweat equity into the construction of their homes and their neighbors’ homes and pay a monthly mortgage. Since Habitat homes are built using volunteers and many donations, mortgage payments are kept affordable.
Fact: Low-cost housing studies in the United States shows that affordable housing has no adverse effect on other neighborhood property values. In fact, Habitat houses have increased property values and local government tax income. Our homeowners have paid over $3.7 million in property taxes.
Fact: Habitat operates through locally governed affiliates with a strong emphasis on grassroots organizations and local autonomy. Habitat affiliates are independent, nonprofit organizations that operate within specific service areas in a covenant relationship with Habitat for Humanity International.
Fact: Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization. However, homeowners are chosen without regard to race, religion, or ethnic group in keeping with U.S. law and with Habitat’s abiding belief that God’s love extends to everyone. Habitat also welcomes volunteers, from all faiths or no faith, who actively embrace Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Fact: Any new house is going to be a dramatic change for a family that has been living in sub-standard housing conditions. But Habitat homes are not extravagant by any standard. Habitat’s philosophy is to build simple, decent homes. Generally speaking, Habitat homes range from approximately 1,000 square feet to 1,400 square feet in size. Homes have three or four bedrooms and one or two bathrooms.
Some, but not all, Habitat homeowners receive SNAP or other government funds. All homebuyers must meet income requirements in order to be approved in our program.
Fact: Habitat builds in partnership with those in need of decent housing — regardless of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Criteria for our homeownership program can be found on the Homeownership page.
Fact: Habitat is an ecumenical Christian housing organization. It is neither an arm of the government nor an arm of any particular church or denomination.
Fact: Habitat was started in 1976 in Americus, GA by Millard Fuller along with his wife, Linda. President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, have been longtime Habitat supporters and volunteers who help bring national attention to the organization’s work. Each year they lead the Jimmy Carter Work Project to help build houses and raise awareness of the need for affordable housing.
Fact: At Habitat Louisville, we envision a world where everyone has a decent place to live. This is why Habitat Louisville tithes 10% of all unrestricted funds to our sister affiliate, Habitat for Humanity of Guatemala. Over the past 13 years, we’ve been able to serve 174 Guatemalan families through the construction of 29 new homes and 145 Healthy Home Kits (smokeless stoves, water filters and sanitary latrines).
